Research Themes of the Varahan Lab @CCMB

1.
Decipher the metabolic basis of fungal morphogenesis and its implications in fungal virulence using fungal model systems including Saccharomyces cerevisiae and pathogenic fungi including Candida albicans & Cryptococcus neoformans.

2. Elucidate the mechanisms underlying exacerbated fungal infections in inflammatory host environments and deciphering the key host regulatory pathways that balance the inflammatory response and promote fungal clearance.

Long-term Research Vision:

1. Advancing and validating lead antifungal candidates using a multi-disciplinary approach and establish a discovery-to-therapeutics pipeline.

2. Designing host-directed immunotherapies to rebalance dysregulated inflammatory signaling to promote protective antifungal immunity.
